Why do I need dental cleaning twice a year?

Hello Friends!

We want to first welcome you to Huntington Beach Tooth Blog. We hope that we will be able to help you and your loved ones by providing information on dental care and help you save money and anxiety in these economic hard times.

When we try to cut back financially, we first go after the expenses that can be labeled as optional. Dental cleaning is considered as one of those “optional” ones by many people. Even though it is one of the least expensive treatments you could get at any dental office, it is still postponed by many patients. It is obvious that patients don’t think they need a teeth cleaning twice a year.  However, American Dental Association states that everybody needs to have a teeth cleaning at least every 6 months. Why do we need dental cleaning twice a year? Here are some reasons for you!

1.       PREVENT CANCER

Mouth is a gate-way to overall health! When your teeth are cleaned twice a year, you may prevent Pancreas Cancer. According to a study in 2010 by Harvard School of Public Health, there is a link between periodontal disease (gum disease) and risk of pancreas cancer. If you don’t believe us, listen to what Whoopie Goldberg says. She knows what we are talking about. : )

2.       PREVENT TOOTH LOSS

You can prevent teeth loss. Yes, it is true. If your teeth are not regularly cleaned by a dentist, you may get periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the inflammation of gums and if it remains untreated bone loss is one of its consequences.  When there is not enough bone left, you may lose your teeth.

3.       PREVENT COMPLICATIONS DURING PREGNANCY

If you are pregnant or planning to be one, you should NOT skip your teeth cleaning. When you are pregnant, because of your hormones, you are more subject to gum disease.  In addition to risks mentioned above, gum disease and cavities can cause low birth weight and other complications during pregnancy. A simple teeth cleaning can help you have a healthy pregnancy and it is totally safe to have it during your pregnancy.

4.       BAD BREATH

Sometimes brushing your teeth twice a day is not enough to stop bad breath. Bad breath can create really awkward social situations. You know it is there and probably the person you are trying to have a conversation can smell it, too. We all have been there. However, it is not the only reason to have it taken care of. Bad breath can be a symptom of a dental problem, such as gingivitis which is caused by bacteria in your mouth. In addition, bad breath can be a symptom of many other diseases from gastroesophageal reflux disease to kidney problems.

By visiting your dentist twice a year you accomplish two important things. You stay as healthy as possible and reduce future dental expenses. So let’s talk now. We want to know if you’d still skip your teeth cleaning appointment even after reading the information above and your reasons to skip it.

Wishing you a healthy mouth until the next time!
